NoMa Underpass
Washington, DC
Washington, DC
As the winning entry for the NoMa Underpass, this proposal transforms four underpasses into light-filled, dynamic spaces that enhance the experience for pedestrians, cyclists, and multi-modal traffic. Our design for the M Street underpass features a woven metal fabric canopy, creating a monochromatic color field that moves from East to West with cool blue tones, inspired by the concept of movement and transformation. The L Street underpass is reimagined with an organic canopy structure, where springs on the canopy edges resonate with vibrations from passing trains above, creating an urban forest effect that dapples light on the ground below. This fluid light field becomes a dynamic destination, offering a vibrant, immersive light experience at night.
Partnership between the NoMa Parks Foundation, the District of Columbia government, WMATA, and Amtrak.
