Detroit, MI
For the Cultural Midtown District project, the design for the DIA was recognized as a finalist in this international design competition. Envisioned as a vibrant cultural district that fosters community interaction, this arts district strengthens connections among the many local museums and institutions. The vision of this project is focused on creating a foundation for arts programming, with spaces for arts performances, pop-up installations, and public gardens, all aimed at promoting inclusivity and diversity within the community.
By bringing together residents of all backgrounds, the plan creates an inviting environment that encourages engagement and collaboration. Drawing inspiration from Detroit’s rich maker history, the design incorporates upcycled local materials and modern interpretations of traditional crafts, contributing to an authentic sense of place. This approach celebrates the unique cultural heritage of this historic part of Detroit, ensuring that the cultural midtown district becomes a dynamic hub for the community.
