Bal Harbour, FL
At the northern tip of Miami Beach sits a subtropical paradise – Bal Harbour Village. Developed with community insights and leveraging environmental resources, the masterplan re-envisions Bal Harbour Village as a resilient waterfront destination allowing for visitors to immerse themselves in this waterfront experience. Within its pristine waterfront, this Vision Plan stands to improve the public realm by reinforcing a unique pedestrian loop, develop a strategy for coastal resiliency and enhance the natural terra and benthic habitats.
With sensitivity to the site’s unique ecology, the masterplan encompasses a series of new public landscapes along the waterfront, allowing visitors and residents to engage the diverse marine life that defines the character of this Village. As part of the first phase, the north amenities include garden nooks along the Harborwalk, resiliency and safety improvements to the jetty pathway, new artificial reefs and native planted beach dune gardens. Creating a new iconic landmark for the Village of Bal Harbour, the jetty promontory with its new light beacon provides a unique opportunity of a 360-degree view of the horizon and an incredible immersive ocean experience.

The jetty’s elevation has been raised above current storm surge with precast concrete slabs capping the walkway to improve protection against wave and tidal forces. Monolithic walls, guardrails, and flood gates allow controlled access during extreme weather. An artificial reef is integrated into the design to balance impacts on coral reefs and marine life to support biodiversity. Fortified seawall openings maintain strong flood defenses, while ecological elements like artificial reefs support marine biodiversity. Enhancements such as a navigation beacon, water access steps, an amphitheater, and shaded seating create a resilient, environmentally conscious, and community-friendly waterfront destination.
As seagrass and coral are protected natural resources, potential impacts to resources will need to be eliminated and/or minimized to the greatest extent possible.
